Aja has been a fan favorite since her ‘Ruveal’ on RuPual’s Drag Race Season 9. Not to mention her dramatic return in All Stars 3, where she went on to place 7th. I recently had the opportunity to talk to Aja about her current projects, and life after RuPaul’s Drag Race!
Q: How has your style of drag changed since appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race?
A: I don’t really consider myself to be doing much dragon you more. Being a queer artist my drag has become more of a gender expression for me. So I’m not really following a style, as much as just being myself.
Q: How did you come up with the name Aja?
A: The name Aja Comes from a Bollywood song from a movie called disco dancer. It literally means come here in Hindi.
Q: What queen do you keep in contact with the most, and why?
A: I keep in contact with anyone who wants to keep in contact with me. I don’t really have any qualms about keeping in contact with the other queens. They’re all pretty cool.
Q: What’s the most important life lesson you’ve learnt from Drag?
A: The most important thing I’ve learned from drag us to not take everything so seriously. But ironically when you’re doing drag sometimes you over criticize yourself. So I’ve learned a lot of lessons about self-confidence.
Q: What’s your inspiration behind your wildly-popular single ‘BRUJERÍA’?
A: My inspiration behind BRUJERÍA was talking about practices that are looked down upon in mainstream American society but also Mentioning the Americanized idea of a commercial witch. All of this with the hopes that when people see both topics being brought up at the same time they will realize that there is beauty in all of it.
Q: Who do you think will win Season 10?
A: I actually have no idea. It has been driving me crazy.
Q: What’s next for Aja?
A: Next step for me is all about my music and touring the world with a new act. I’m working on an album. And a new music video for the third single off of my EP “I don’t wanna brag”
Thanks, Aja! You really are one of the fiercest Kweens I know! Can’t wait to listen to your new album and see where life takes you next!
